So we can all see the pattern: with global warming, AIDS, and now homelessness, the msm has hugely exaggerated -- lied -- about the size and seriousness of the problem. Why? One obvious reason is $$ - scary stories = more viewers = more advertising dollars. But money isn't the only reason, and sometimes, not the most important reason. For example, if the msm was only interested in money, they could have continued to hype the homeless story when Bill Clinton became president. But they did not -- they just killed the story. Why? Because it would have made President Clinton, a liberal, look bad -- and the media, 89% of whom voted for Clinton, wanted him to look good.
With Goldberg, I think you agree that bias of any kind in news reporting is bad. Conservative bias would be equally bad. If 90% of journalists were Martians, Martian bias would be bad. The fact is that the huge majority of journalists in the msm are liberal in their thinking and in their social values -- they may be diverse in many ways -- black, white, Asian, hispanic, middle eastern, male, female -- but in the way they view the world, 90% have the same values, beliefs, and convictions.
What do you think could be done to bring balance to the newsroom? (No, the government can't make laws to force the msm to change).
Welcome
We'll take a close look at how the major U.S. television news media present some of the big issues of our time like the environment, AIDS, racism, and terrorism.I hope that you'll discover some answers to the question expressed by the course title.
Bias by Bernard Goldberg is available in the bookstore. Goldberg was a senior reporter with CBS News. He wrote this book, which became a bestseller, five years ago. It's an insider's view of how the major television news media often slant important stories. Because of this book, most of his friends in the media dumped him and claimed that he is just angry with CBS, his former employer.
You'll write summaries of each chapter week by week, so buy the book now. This course will involve a fair bit of reading and a lot of discussion, both posting your opinion on this website and talking in class.

As a reader I would do a feedback by writing or emailing the editor of the article that I see is bias and point out why it is bias.
As an owner of mass media, I will establish and implement a kind of news fairness control board including into it people from out side of media business who will have authority to review news are being published and correct it to make a balanced tone and represent different point of views on controversial issues to bring some fairness back to media business.
first i would think of is making some kinda of laws which restricts some unbalance situation appear on the news. On the other hand, media should hire the employees who come from different parties or cultures. Before the media post some news, they need people to analyze it. The media should encourage journalists to speak up their own idea instead just following the flow.
If I will be a owner or a main executive of one news channel, then I will first hire responsible and trustworthy employees. After that I will make a code of conduct or some general principles that every person should follow. We will try our best to publish all real stories and news in our channel though we will face political parties' pressure, but I think that will be our challenge to broadcast true story and news every time.
Introducing both a conservative and liberal view on an issue could possibly help to prevent any kind of bias to be presented to the public. If I owned my own news channel, I would ask those who are working for me to cease writing any exaggerated numbers to "scare" the public/ viewers. Thus, I don't think it is quite necessary for the public to be scared and lied to in order for them to help fund/ support a certain cause/ issue. If we were only told the truth (the REAL truth), we wouldn't be misled about what is really happening at all.
If I had the ability to bring balance to the newsroom, I would broadcast the truth to everyone and give them what they want. I believe this is more fair and everyone is given the chance to research more indepth about the problem and decide who to believe. There will always be people who are cynical to believe what the msm has to say but are we not capable of researching the information ourselves? I would definately stop the media by taking action in telling the world what they should know. There would be no exaggerations or lies because that does not help the situation. The plans/problems should be laid out straight for everyone to know then act upon it.
To bring balance to the newsroom, liberal minded journalists should be turned away at the interview process. If a very liberal minded journalist comes to a MSM company, they should be asked a variety of questions about their views of the world, the economy, current politicians, and current headline stories. If their answers are clearly liberal, they should not be hired into the business of reporting. However, I would implement the same principal towards very conservative minded people as well. To bring balance to the news room all journalists should be in a neutral position so they can look at all the facts, and present these to the public, without any bias.
To bring the balance to the newsroom, the media could hire 50% of journalist who support liberal and 50% of journalist who support conservative party.
Another way is choose a person inspect or check any bias opinion in a article before it is published. This person should be one who don't support any parties.
I feel that i would be much more fair if not just on opinion and point of view of certain people was stated, but different perceptions and alternatives were at least evaluated as well. I would give the reader with clearer and fair picture of what actually is happening, as oppose to one side of the story from certain group of people.
The MSM should concern from the public view which is how they think about the news. Personally, the MSM should make the program which is sharing public opinion or view and how they react from the news. Therefore, the different view will be close each other, or at least understand them.
The issue of the bias views throughout msm is simply something the general population can not change. The general population should become aware of the lack of integrity in such sources of broadcasting institutions, and question the authenticity of the "facts" they are presented with. In order to bring balance to the newsroom, the other side of the picture, being the conservatives in this case, should work on trying to educate the public, with the same methods used against them (msm), with the facts that the public in fact lack. The public, at that point, has the chance to evaluate and study their option of belief.
Having a news team that is both liberal and conservatives argue over each topic that is to be presented over the newscast. In addition, giving a chance to the critics to share their opinion that will be shared throughout the news team and the staff.
Things that the MSM can implemented to bring balance into the newsroom can very hard. There can be things done by higher authority managers where they can overlook the news/ issue/ topic to be reported are equally balanced by all negatives and positives. For example, if i am to report about AIDS, I will make sure that there are the true results being told and also list all bad and good points on it to make it balance and not all false and makeup information with only one sided view on the topic.
It is hard for these to happen because what the MSM is good for, we all know. They need the lies and exaggeration to maintain good rating. There may be many things to be done and implemented but it is just hard to do. they may not even try to balance the news room. As it is in Canada, it should be a diversity environment, same with the MSM, they should have equal amount of different people working, in regards to the race, religion, political view etc.
To bring balance to the newsroom, the msm has to somehow present both sides equally, but also make it entertaining, or hire someone who is conservative.
In order to bring balanced and fair reporting from the MSM, I think they should have people that are independent from politics, separated from all personal beliefs and values to authorize what goes through the media and what cannot be shown. Only this way it will encourage independent, fair and balanced reporting.
Let's go out to meet more conservative friends. Listening and understanding what conservatives said is very significant to change our bias in news reporting. Because 89% journalists are liberals, the top management of the Msm should hire some conservatives to balance the percentage between the liberals journalists and conservatives journalists . opposite opinions or arguments are a kind of tool to decease the bias in the news reporting.
If I am the owner of the media company, I would set the rule about political preference for recruiting people. To make the news reporting balanced, there shouldn't be major political preference among the journalists, like liberal nowadays (according to the research, 89% of the journalists are liberal). That make news reports are not balanced at all. Therefore, when I hire journalists, I would try to hire both liberals and conservatives (try to make them balanced).
in order for there to be balance in the newsroom bothsides of each stories should told to the public so the public can decide which side they believe in. Also, the people in the newsroom should made to understand that their personally feelings or values should not over cloud their Judgement.they should not favour one side more than the other.
personally, I think the independent people should have the finally say about what should be feed to the public.
I think a good way to regulate or make news much fairer is that inside the news organization, the organization should have certain rules, and the news organization should distribute more employees to edit, check and analysis the news will be published, especially be more careful to the activitists.
Besides, as a reader, I am easily to be influenced by the media, before I believe or judge the news. I need to think what their purpose is and do some research. Then we can see the problem clearly. Then for us there won’t be too much bias.
every employ must go though ethic presentation, oath, and must sign a contract, toward biased news report, will also try to educate them about all the different views, design a interview to know different views .
I believe that much must get done inorder to create balance to the newsroom. As stated many times before the main stream news media fails to properly give 100& accurate coverage of stories to the public. I feel asthough it is crucial for newsroom's to start displaying both political sides of matters (liberal vs conservative, democrat vs. republican). Through having newsrooms which do not provide both sides, creates the appearance that the side that is non-favoured is incorrect, and has no impact, nor does it matter in any cases. Being impartial to one side, is unfair - which is why if I was at liberty of changing up the newsroom I would ensure that both sides of political matters are equally covered - helping to create all fairness. In my mind it is without a doubt that if I was to run a news network of some sort that not ALL of the workers are going to have the same thoughts and beliefs regarding matters. To conclude, I would ensure that it is made CRYSTAL CLEAR, that all workers are made aware of this, stating that both sides of the political spectrum are to be covered in the news presented, as it ultimately is the fair and correct way to inform the public.
I think it is very difficult to change because of media environment even the CEO of broadcasting is aware of this problem. Media is connected to government, money, ratings, high- ranking officials. If the CEO has much more power than government officials and does not much care about the ratings, news reporting can be balanced. Or What else. If broadcasting reporters are consisted of half Liberal and half Conservatives, it should be possible. Before that, I don't think it is easy.
Reported news are just delivered from media to public but if main news or issue can be discussed with both side such as conservative or liberal and find the neutral point then,it can be balanced.
To bring balance to the newsroom, there would need to be more diversity in the thinking if everyone. In others words less liberal and more other beliefs. This way people with different opinions will more likely express their opinion, and the views of the public will be expressed (not just one view).
If I had the opportunity to bring change and balance to the newsroom I would news reporters that take the extra time to do their research and demonstrate appropriate information, providing CORRECT facts and figures allowing viewers to know where this information has been provided from. Although some reporters may have strong views on certain issues I feel that it is best to provide viewers w/ both sides, so perhaps having two different reporters presenting their perceptions, facts & figures so the viewers have a sense of both sides.
I would like to have journalist with both views reporting to the public. If i were a Director of a newspaper or some sort of media source, i would try my best, for my employees to broadcast both views. I would give my viewers both sides so they would be informed correctly and can form their own opinion.
