"How About a Media that Reflects America?"
You may post this up any time before the due date if you like; I'm just giving you the option because of the short assignment that will be due by Thursday next week.
Don't want to overload you.
Welcome
We'll take a close look at how the major U.S. television news media present some of the big issues of our time like the environment, AIDS, racism, and terrorism.I hope that you'll discover some answers to the question expressed by the course title.
Bias by Bernard Goldberg is available in the bookstore. Goldberg was a senior reporter with CBS News. He wrote this book, which became a bestseller, five years ago. It's an insider's view of how the major television news media often slant important stories. Because of this book, most of his friends in the media dumped him and claimed that he is just angry with CBS, his former employer.
You'll write summaries of each chapter week by week, so buy the book now. This course will involve a fair bit of reading and a lot of discussion, both posting your opinion on this website and talking in class.

The main issue discussed in Chapter 8 is that many people know there is “Liberal Bias” in the MSM and yet the MSM elites are denying it. A prime example of the media elites denying there is Liberal Bias is when Mr. Dan Rather said “…great political myths, about press bias. Most reporters don’t know whether they’re Republican or Democrat, and vote every which way?” According to the survey conducted by the Freedom Forum and the Roper Center, 89 percent of the journalists voted Bill Clinton. Also, when the journalists are asked what party they identify with, the results were 61 percent said liberal or moderate to liberal. While only 9 percent said conservative or moderate to conservative. Based on these results, you can see Mr. Rather contradicting his own statement because most of the journalists know and identify themselves as Liberals, and they votes towards the Democrats. If you don’t call this denial, then I don’t know what to call it. And because there are so many liberals in the MSM, everyone has the same basic values and believes. As a result, these people do not see their views and values as “Liberal” but as the mainstream views.
The real issue is not so much of Liberal Bias but is to bring fairness and balanced news to the public. Although looking at the facts we all know that there is Liberal Bias, but what can we do to prevent it? Just my personal thought, I don’t think by having half liberals and half conservatives in the news room will do any good. However, it is still better than having more liberals than conservatives. And having more conservatives than liberals in the MSM wouldn’t be any better - “Conservative Bias”. Personally, I think it is virtually impossible to have fair and balanced news reporting. No matter which party the journalists identify him or her-self with, they will bring in their personal values and believes in the reporting. At the end, the report itself is biased. To have fair and balanced reporting is to live in an ideal world. And that ideal world as Mr. Goldberg would say “we wouldn’t need conservatives to balance out the liberals… But obviously we don’t live in an ideal world….”
Chapter 8 reflects upon the bias and partiality of liberalism. The Liberal Bias occurs not only with in the mainstream news media, it also is within the public, and within our society. When asked the question "how do you characterize your political orientation"? 61 percent of the people opted for the liberal party, proving that less than half of the people opt for the conservative party (pg. 130). Lastly, Goldberg touches base on how affirmative action plans must be taken into consideration and formed into plans of action. In order of even a minute amount of diversity to arise within the newsrooms actions must be taken. Concluding the issue of Chapter 8, Goldberg makes note of if we lived in a ideal(bias free) world, this would not be an issue, but since we do not, this is an ocurance within our society.
"Ofcourse, in an ideal world, we wouldn't need conservatives to balance liberals. In an ideal world, we wouldn't ask, no matter how subtly if a perspective hire was conservative or liberal. In an ideal world, none of this would matter" (pg. 136)
In response, I feel as though Goldberg states good points regarding the issue of an unproportioned MSM. It is obvious that a perfect world, split down the middle is no where near possible to achieve. But I strongly feel that fairness is something that must be attained. Different opinions and views regarding political/non political issues, should be accepted. For not all of us are the same, and we're all bound to have differences regarding thoughts and views.
The basic idea that reflects in chapter 8 is that well known liberal bias in MSM is denied by top rated media executives although some of them like Andrew Heyward, acknowledges the fact of liberal bias in media, but refuses to talk about it openly.Others don't even want to recognize the fact and Goldberg explains it as they consider it as mainstream view because those who surround them share and poses the same view and "because that's how they see things , that's also how they report the news".Even the survey conducted by the Freedom Forum and the Roper centre can't change their opinion on the issue. And they will do every thing to destroy any "whistle blowers", an insiders like Goldberg, who dare to talk about it.
Media that could reflect the real America should be based on diversity of views, pluralism of opinion as the American society. Probably there is no unique way to prevent bias in media as every journalist, staff reporter, executive has his/her own view as the way they were brought up and the way they live shape their view of the world. But there should be a fair balance between the fact and its interpretation. To see the fact from the different points of view and talk about those different points of view would be a good practise of the profession.
In my opinion "watchdog journalism" practise could bring back the MSM to a balanced platform.
Chapter 8, presents the perfect example of the mainstream bias. First of all, when someone provides the truth of the actual situation, he/she is automatically called a “whistle blower”. There are not many of those people, which are willing to expose all secrets that would benefit the society by finding out the actual story. In addition, danger is a big risk factor to them, loosing a job etc., it takes a lot of whether courage or stupidity to do that. It should be normal for the media give accurate information, which does not happened in reality. Second of, all numbers were incorrect, the truth is – it was all changed to match the point that the media was trying very hard to prove right.
I feel that I have been cheated by the government for all this time. Until I started to take the course, I was completely sure that everything they talk about in the media is correct. The reality is- it seems like most of the things they talk about are not correct. It is something that believe is right, or even something that will bring them more money. Media is a business, but in these kind cases and business fields you can’t only think about the money, what about the people? It is just not fair.
After Bernard Goldberg decided to present the truth about the mainstream media’s ability to exaggerate, lie, cause havoc/ fear towards the public, many liberal reporters were furious. Though there are others like Goldberg, such as Andrew Hayward for example, they have all chosen to keep it a secret from their viewers. “In an ideal world”, as Goldberg puts it, a liberal or conservative perspective would not exist. However, the reality is that we do not live in an ideal world.
Dan Rather also rejected Goldberg’s claims of a press bias. Rather proclaimed that, “reporters don’t know whether they’re Republican or Democrat” and that reporters are more of a group of “commonsense moderates”. If Rather’s statement were in fact true, then 89% of the journalists that voted for Bill Clinton (a Democrat) would not have voted for him. But they did. If all reporters were in fact “commonsense moderates” they would not present Democrats as the “heroes” while portraying Republicans as the “enemies”.
The main issue discussed in 8 chapters is that liberal bias in the media. Bernard Goldberg was fired because he made the public to know there is liberal bias in the media. The elites are denying this fact. For example, Dr. Dan Rather claimed that "most reporters don't know whether they're Republican or Democrat". In the survey that was conducted 89 percent of journalists voted for democrat as a result they represent themselves as liberal. Based on this fact journalists tend to be biased in their views and the way they report news. They tend to favor democrat because they have the same values and beliefs.
How many people will not let their personal beliefs and values to over shadow their judgments? It is human nature to be bias. We do not live in an ideal world. We are far from it. I do not believe for a second there will be a balance reporting in the media even if numbers from both sides are even, because every one of them is coming in with their beliefs and values. I believe for there to be fairness in reporting, reformation has to start from the top. For example, the owners of media houses, who are they, what political party do they belong
In Chapter 8, Goldberg describes that how a media reflects America. Goldberg uses his own experiences and some evidences to demonstrate that MSM are liberal and democrats. Liberal bias is very clear in USA. Firstly, as a whistle-blower, Goldberg has had a different encounter. Some friends of his said:” He is stupid.” Some said “He is a hero.” In CBC news, as a whistle-blower, Goldberg gets fired. Keeping the job, Goldberg had no free- speech right to say. However, Goldberg stands by what he has written “unpopular news”. Eventually, he doesn’t get his job back. The fact illustrates there is a liberal bias in CBS news. On the other hand, Goldberg describes some figures and facts to expose that the media are liberal. For instance, a survey from Freedom Forum evidenced the journalists are far more liberal. Liberals outnumber conservatives by seven to one. Due to election in history, most journalists vote the liberals. About religion issues, a producer from Washington bureau calls “Gary Baucer, the little nut from the Christian group”. In fact, Baucer was conservative and Christian. Another reporter, Turner calls Christianity was a religion “for losers”. Journalists disrespect to religion group, which indicates how MSM are liberal bias. In conclusion, Goldberg advocates that MSM need more conservatives to balance liberals; bring different perspective to the job of reporting the news.
The main point of the Chapter 5 is about bias news media and why most of the journalists are supporting Liberal party in America.
In this chapter, the author wisely discussed about liberal bias. The survey of the Freedom Forum showed that 89 percent of the journalists voted for liberal and which was more than the general public vote in America. But why they are doing like that? Really they are not personally gave this vote, in the chapter the author mentioned,"Most Reporters don't know if they're Republican or Democrat?" By this statement it is slightly clear that, how biased our news media is as well as journalists. The major aspects of the news media is to support the political party and provide the bias news to the public.
Another important topic came out from this Chapter is about "whistle blower". Here the author said, if anyone tried to publish a real news in the media or tried to take a step against those slant news, then they face lots of problems in their professional life. The author beautifully described,"I might be fired because they saw me as a whistle blower, which, the best I could figure, made me the first whistle blower in history who wasn't turned into a national hero by the media." How sad it is, that our news media has no fairness anymore. Imbalanced news we are listening everyday and we are believing those bias news.
The main issue in chapter 8 is that many people know that there is liberal bias in the news media. Limbaugh read Goldberg’s journal column on his radio station and many people agreed to what Goldberg had said. Limbaugh also told his audience, “that seeks whistle-blowers out; they love dirty little secrets.” Everyone in the news media thinks what Goldberg did was ‘stupid’ or ‘hateful and disgusting’ for telling the secrets of the media. Many news reporters keep the secrets of the truth in order to keep their jobs, but Goldberg is not one of them. There is a lot of bias towards the liberal and conservatives as well because of favouring one group over the other. Howard Kurtz said, “Clearly anybody looking at those numbers, if they’re even close to accurate, would conclude that there is a diversity problem in the news business, and it’s not just the kind of diversity we usually talk about, which is not getting enough minorities in the news business, but political diversity, as well. Anybody who doesn’t see that is just in denial.”
This chapter definitely makes you think about the bias the media has done to many problems such as politics. Many of the journalists stated by Goldberg are mostly democrats than conservatives. I don’t think reporters leave their ‘personal’ feelings aside because many of them do tend to bring their personal feelings into reporting. Tom Rosensetiel said, “Bias is the elephant in the living room. We’re in denial about it and don’t want to admit it’s there…” this quote is true because society does not want to acknowledge the truth of a problem.
Summary: this chapter is talking about liberal bias in the CBS news. The author was worried about been fired after his article posted on the Wall Street Journal, because he consider as the whistle blower. Though he’s safe, Goldberg wants to tell the truth about the bias in the media and also wants to encourage his colleagues speak up and support him. One of his friends works for CBS Evening news told him about his op-ed was stupid and wasn’t courageous. However Goldberg does get some support from Michael Gartner former newspaper editor but it was indirect support. Also from conservative side that they do believe whistle blower can tell all kinds of truths. On the other hand, majority journalists do not agree with Goldberg, but they do know the issue exists and they just deny the fact. This issue is nothing more than an argument for fairness and balance; if we flip the liberal with conservative then the liberal would have the same feeling as the conservative feels now. That is how the real world works.
It is so true. Almost everyone knows that the bias do exist but how many of them willing to speak up. Very little people are brave enough to speak up in public. It just like an example Goldberg gives in the article that he doubt when Roxanne’s state at “the little nut from the Christian group” then who would stand up and point it out say it’s wrong. So I think bias comes from human nature also from the peer pressure. I do agree with the points that Goldberg reveals in the article. It has nothing to do with Liberal or Conservative. The problem is which one has in favored by majority of people. Thus we can’t really avoid the bias totally. What we can do is trying to minimize the bias and show public the real problems through media.
Basically chapter 8 talks about liberal bias is not recognized in the media. All the media shun away Goldberg, as they don't want him to explain or express his points. The media threatens to destroy Goldberg when he talks about it.
I believe the media is a money making business. They are not there to tell the truth and does not explain both sides to the public. This would be the professional thing to do and practice in our society.
The main point in chapter 8 is that the MSM has liberal bias and the MSM denies it. For example, Bernard Goldberg attempted to present truth story but he was fired and considered about the “whistle-blower”. Also, the survey of the freedom forum showed “89 percent of the journalists said the voted for Bill Clinton …….. while 19 percent of the electorate did.” (pg 129) It based on journalists who reflect own view in the MSM to the public. That is anymore argument for fairness and balance. The MSM need more conservatives to balance for liberal.
How many people know this fact? I guess most people just believe what they present because we know the MSM presents only the truth. Even though I thought they are always correct. However, I got it now. The MSM is one of business group in society. The MSM does not know how much the information is powerful, and important in our society. They should report truth for our future.
Chapter 8 “How About a Media That Reflects America?” is talking about a media bias- specifically a liberal bias. The author, Bernard Goldberg starts from the op-ed about media liberal bias. He wrote this to announce how the media is surrounded by liberal views. The author uses the Freedom Forum- 89% of the journalists voted for Bill Clinton while 7% of the journalists voted for George Bush. When journalists were asked, “How do you characterize your political orientation?” 61% said “liberal” or “moderate to liberal.” Only 9% said they were “conservative” or “moderate to conservative.” Goldberg also criticizes what Dan Rather believes “most reporters don’t know whether they’re Republican or Democrat, and vote every which way.” From the op-ed, he is treated as a “whistle- blower” and kept off the air, even though he wrote the right thing to let the public know as an honest journalist. He says news is a business. He also understands it is not just a collection of facts. It is also how reporters and editors see those facts, how they interpret them, and what facts they think are newsworthy to begin with. He suggests as a kind of solution- just some goals and timetables to bring more conservatives into America’s newsrooms. At the last, he says “in an idle world, we wouldn’t need conservatives to balance liberals; however, we don’t live in an idle world. That’s why we have affirmative action.”
After reading this chapter, I knew how much journalists supported liberal sides and Democratic in 1990’s. Even media repots biased news to the public. I think the purpose of news is providing the facts to the public; however, on the other sides, it looks impossible to report only the exact facts because journalists are also human being- they have their own believes, religion, favors and values. The author is a very brave person because he knows this op-ed column will affect much to his carrier and his job. He tries to let the public know the truth of the real media world. I impressed about his words that “in an idle world, we wouldn’t need conservatives to balance liberals. But we don’t live in an idle world.” Like he said, we don’t live in an idle world and it should be impossible. However, at least we have to try to see what the right news is and what is biased and say to people like what Goldberg did. If someone tries to do something like what Bernard did, newsroom is more balanced and fair than now.
In chapter 8 of BIAS, “how about a media that reflects America”, the main point in this chapter is about media bias. Mr. Goldberg mention in this chapter how the news mafia was all over him because of what he did, being a “whistle blower”, the first whistle blower in history who wasn’t turned into a hero by the media (pg 117). He was the one that has spoken the truth about the media bias. However, in this chapter Mr. Goldberg talks more about the liberal Bias and how the MSM elites would deny that there is in the newsroom. Mr. Goldberg spills their “little dirty secret” as Cal Thomas, the conservative columnist puts it, he is forever hate by the media especially those that are liberals. Including Mr. Dan Rather, he did not believe that there is liberal bias in the news. Rather mention that “it’s one great political myths, about press bias. Most reporters don’t know whether they’re Republican or Democrat, and vote every which way.” But the result and surveys shows that “61 % of the people said “liberal “ or “moderate to liberal” and only 9 % was conservatism. It shows that the democrats outnumber the republicans and yet Dan Rather is just denying and hoping that people will believe in what he is saying.
Never in today society will there ever be a balance newsroom. It will always be favored to one side. As discussed in class, it you put equal amount of liberals and conservatives in the newsroom, there will still be the “little” more of one side. If majority is the liberals, sure there will be the “liberal bias” and same goes for the conservatives, if they are the majority then we called them the “conservative bias”. Life is unfair, everything is unfair and unbalance so why are we not surprise by the unbalance and unfair MSM reporting. We just have to be smart and think of what to believe and what not too. Nevertheless I would agree with Goldberg as being the “whistle blower” we have the right to know the truth. If I were him, I would chose to be a whistle blower too.
The main issue discussed in chapter 8 is the ‘liberal bias’ in the mainstream media. At the beginning of this chapter, the writer, Bernard Goldberg uses some episodes he experienced after the op-ed which was about the liberal bias in the media was published. He became so-called ‘whistle-blower’, and a few people supported him (some of them such as the anti-Christ, Rush Limbaugh made the situation even worse though), but most liberal journalists criticized him. They treated his action as a stupid and inappropriate one that ruins the reputation of the media (especially the CBS News). But he strongly believes that the liberal bias is a very serious problem, the public should know this fact, and it has to be fixed. According to the survey, “89 percent of the journalists said they voted for Bill Clinton in 1992”, and “61 percent said they are liberal or moderate to liberal”. As a human being, a journalist can’t be perfectly objective to a certain issue so it’s inevitable that he/she would report in a certain point of view. The writer argues that it’s not a problem for journalists to have a certain political preference, but the problem is news repots are unbalanced as the majority of the media is the liberal. As being a bit sarcastic, he even argues that journalists would better do some affirmative action for conservatives, as they are apparently minority in the world of journalism.
Honestly, I was shocked when I read some part of this chapter. I had thought before I started taking this course, but after I took the lectures and read this book ‘Bias’, I realized I was wrong. I already knew that the media is ‘liberally’ biased through the lectures, so it was no surprises that most journalists (according to the survey, 61%) are liberal or moderate to liberal. However, it was surprising what most journalists react on the published op-ed about revealing truth of liberal bias. I can understand why people in the media kept silence about liberal bias before; they could be afraid of being fired, losing friends and so forth. They might be too cowardly to be the first person to speak out the truth. I expected, however, after the secrets out, there must be some movements to support revealing truth and try to fix the problem among the journalists, as their original purpose is speaking truth. But I guess I was too idealist. Most journalists denied that and got upset that somebody had spoken out the inconvenient truth. I was really shocked and disappointed to meet the fact that the journalists are not working for the truth and justice but money. Of course not everyone is like that, but I felt most of them is not righteous as I expected.
In Chapter 8, Bernard Goldberg talked about bias and partiality of liberal existed in U.S newsroom and his solution to balance the U.S newsroom. At the beginning, he used his experience demonstrating that U.S press has bias on news. He went out his article “Wall Street Journal” to American public, exposing U.S press’s dirty line—liberal bias which was a well-known secret inside U.S presses. Although CBC said unpopular things about any subject are allowed based on First Amendment, they will use “all the big guns in its arsenal’ to against “unpopular things” reporter and whistler-blowers. Next, Bernard Goldberg talked about liberal or Democrat bias existence is inevitable because about 80 percent of press voted overwhelmingly Democratic and no journalists are able to report news without any personal facts. After that, Bernard Goldberg gave one solution to balance the newsroom which is politically diversity in newsroom. More conservatives press stuff should be hired to balance liberals.
After reading Bernard Goldberg’s own experience and his article, I was convinced that the U.S media did reported news with bias. As a human being, it is impossible to require a journalist to report news without any personally fact mixed in. Thus, when majority of newsroom stuff are liberal or conservative supporters, there will be a bias inevitable. To solve this problem, I agree with Bernard Goldberg’s solution, bringing more conservative stuff in newsroom. Since we can not find a journalist who is absolutely balanced, hiring more people form the other side and listen some different opinions is the best way to keep fairness.
Chapter 8 is about how bias is the media, Bernard Goldberg exposed how media favors the liberal in terms of reporting and getting facts and he almost lost his job.Goldberg said that they are more liberals in the media than conservatives. In 1992 a survey was conducted as to how many journalist voted for Bill Clinton and 89% of the them voted, in contrast only 7% voted for George Bush (129) from these figures you could see that the overwhelming majority of the media are friends of the liberal. Now the journalist complain saying that the survey did not really reflect the political orientation of the journalist because only 139 correspondents made up the survey, but this was not the first survey taken,a poll back in 1972 showed that of those reporters who voted, 70 percent went for McGovern, the most liberal presidential nominee in recent memory, while 25% went for Nixon(131).We could see clearly that Goldberg was right in saying that media is politically bias in favor of the liberals. Because the media is bias towards the liberals all news and facts will slant towards favoring liberals and news reporting would no longer be fair." News, after all, isn't just collection of facts. Its also how reporters and editors see those facts, how they interpret them, and most important, what facts they think are newsworthy to begin with"(127).
The media according to Goldberg will slant the news to their liking (128).
The chapter is very intriguing because I can relate the media as being more friends with the liberal than the conservatives and friends unconsciously and consciously influence each other in terms of actions and ways of thinking. How can media then provide unbias reporting of news and events if they are politically inclined in favor of the liberals and I can understand now why journalist will never report news that will hurt the liberals but will report only the ones that will favor the liberals and do the opposite on the conservatives. In the interest of fair and balance news reporting, media executives should discourage political biases and should hire a balance number of liberals and conservative journalist in their staff after all, the saying holds true;" Tell me who your friends are and I will tell you, who you are".
In this Chapter Goldberg talks about how much of who report stories to the public are very different than the public itself. Many of the MSM journalists are very liberal and statistics show that in proportion to the general public, these journalists are greatly left winged. Since most these reporters live in such places like New York, they are affected by their surroundings, and they deliver the facts they receive with a certain bias which comes from their values. As Goldberg says, what if we had MSM coming out of Omaha, where the community is greatly diverse, but is still conservative relative to New York. We would still have bias in the media. Instead of getting the news in a liberally slanted way, we would get it in a conservatively slanted way, and it’s because these journalists are affected by their surroundings. Either way, getting our news with a slant is not a particularly good situation.
I like the point Goldberg made about Jon Klein, that he’s the kind of guy who thinks people who tell the truth do it mainly because they lack imagination. Its true, telling the truth takes no imagination at all, and usually the truth is boring. If one of the TV executives thinks in such a way there a good chance that everyone who works for him thinks the same. The more imaginative a story is the more ratings it gets. About the MSM not being able to relate to their viewers however, is in my opinion, not so true. I know many people, and of these many, many people, almost every one of them agree with absolutely everything they hear on the news. “Hey dad, what are you voting?”.. “LIBERAL! Don’t you watch the news?!” I think that if these statists were derived from Canada the results would have greatly differed than those State side. Canada is a very liberal country.
Chapter 8 of Bias as described by Mr. Goldberg states the fact that the MSM is filled with Liberal Bias. The America seen by the media elites is not the same America. The author states that 50% of the journalists identify themselves as Democrats while only 4% said they were republican. The head of MSM keep denying the fact that there is a leftward tilt in the media. The chapter goes on explaining how religion does not coincides with the MSM and neither the top management or the staff bother to say anything about it.
Honestly, whats sad is that the main stream media loves make a big fuss about some stupid issue and blow it completely out of proportion.
But, its okay for the MSM to take sides and cut off people who just want their issue out there. Whistle blowing is okay unless its not done to them.
Chapter 8 “How About a Media that Reflects America?” is about liberal bias in the news media; Goldberg discusses what liberal bias really means. He says that the people in the media are both liberal and democrats, and that these views or biases they have influence what they say in the news. The stats that show that the media mainly consists of democrats is that 89 percent of the Washington journalists said they voted for Bill Clinton in ’92 compared to 43 from non-journalists. Another stat is that 50 percent of the journalists said they were democrats while 4 percent were republicans. The reason the media people deny that there is liberal bias in the news is because their friends have the same liberal views as they do, so they believe it’s the right mainstream views. Another interesting fact that Goldberg mentioned is from a writer who said that liberals mainly become reporters because they believe in the ethics and ideals, while conservatives work in the private sector. He goes on to say that if the media were conservatives then they would also slant the news, just like the liberals with their biases.
In response to chapter 8, I think it does somewhat make sense that the media’s beliefs influence what they say in the news, but I’m sure they are slanting the news on purpose and they know that they are being biased. As for the writer who said liberals are reporters and conservatives work in the private sector, in my opinion I don’t think the profession you go into is mainly because of your beliefs. The point that Goldberg made about a conservative media still slanting the news based on their views is very interesting. If that’s the case, then that would mean the only solution for balanced news reporting is by hiring both liberal and conservative personnel.
Chapter 8 talked about the partiality of liberal and the bias that exists in the newsroom and Goldberg‘s solution in order to produce a balanced U.S. newsrooms. Using his experience, Goldberg demonstrated, as well as, exposed how the U.S. press has been bias in the process of delivering the news with the release of his article ”Wall Street Journal”. Because of his actions, Goldberg was then labelled a “whistle-blower”. The chapter also spoke of the very obvious existence of Liberal bias and back it up with many statistics, and one of the most intriguing was a percentage of 89 of journalists voting for Bill Clinton in the 1992 elections. One of Goldberg’s solutions to having a more balanced newsroom was implementing more politically diverse members of press.
I, especially after reading the chapter, am convinced that the U.S. media is bias. The possibility of the public getting an unbiased point of view in the news is very slim, because of the lack of political diversity in the newsroom and the non-existence of a journalist with balanced views . Goldberg’s solution to such an issue may be a great one, but it is far from realistic.
In chapter 8, it talks about the liberal bias in the MSM. Goldberg was isolated or out casted from his coworkers and best friends because he thought that there’s bias existed in the media and published an article about it. Goldberg believed news is mostly reported biasly due to unbalance number of liberal and conservative journalists in the MSM. In addition to that, MSM is strongly aginst what Goldberg has told the public, and do whatever it takes to shut him up.
Bias existed everywhere, not only in the MSM. Any human being could be bias toward some issues. But as for The media, its their job or responsibility to report unbiased news. MSM should not hire people that take sides (liberal nor conservative). We need more people like Goldberg in the media that speak up the truth.
Chapter 8 is talking about how a media reflects America. I think it shows so much conflict between liberal and conservative thoughts in the MSM, about "Liberal Bias", and the bias press. Most reporters they do not stand up for the truth. Instead Goldberg stood up for explaning how the journalists "report" the news, and just express his own opnion, then some jounlists slander him. the journalists report the news depends on the favor of the party.
I think the fighting between the people inside the media also reflects the reality of America. Lots of people do not stand up for the truth. I think people have their own rights to express their opinion. Especially the news reporter should report news fairly without any bias.
