We’ve all heard that "scientists agree" or "the scientific consensus is overwhelming" or "the debate is over". Take a look at this petition, written to the US government in 2000, urging the government not to sign Kyoto. Look at the names/qualifications and the number of scientists—30,000-- who signed.

Welcome
We'll take a close look at how the major U.S. television news media present some of the big issues of our time like the environment, AIDS, racism, and terrorism.I hope that you'll discover some answers to the question expressed by the course title.
Bias by Bernard Goldberg is available in the bookstore. Goldberg was a senior reporter with CBS News. He wrote this book, which became a bestseller, five years ago. It's an insider's view of how the major television news media often slant important stories. Because of this book, most of his friends in the media dumped him and claimed that he is just angry with CBS, his former employer.
You'll write summaries of each chapter week by week, so buy the book now. This course will involve a fair bit of reading and a lot of discussion, both posting your opinion on this website and talking in class.

1. Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
Yes, many people i know (friends and family)have changed their bulbs in their house to the energy saving bulbs.
2. Is the "debate" over?
I don't think it is over since both sides haven't been presented to the people. The media has been very one sided therefore people don't know the full story, and not making educated decisions, society is just following whatever the media tells them.
3. Has the mainstream news media -- msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change'?
No, people haven't heard all the possible argument. The msm has reported their views biasly, by only really showing that global warming is a problem.
1. Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
- Yes, my family and friends have all change their regular light bulbs to the energy savings bulbs. I have been taking public transportation for the past 5 months and leaving the car at home.
2. Is the "debate" over?
- No, I personally don't think that the debate is over. The majority of the public are not aware of the fact and the science behind the climate changes(the other side of the story). There cannot be a debate when only one sides presented. The public cannot decided which side to favour when only one side is known.
3. Has the mainstream news media -- msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change'?
- NOT AT ALL, people will believe what they hear everyday. If only one side of the story is told, that is what they will put in their heads " we are the cause of gobal warming; our cars, technologies, factories etc". To be fair, all facts and knowledge of climate changes should be fully disclosed to the public.
1. Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
Yes and no. I know people have made lifestyle changes like taking the public transit instead of driving and those who have change the light bulbs, stoves and fridges in their homes to more energy saving models. However, these changes are due to the fact of increasing oil, water, and electric prices and not because of the fear of global warming.
2. Is the "debate" over?
There is no debate when only one side of the story is presented to the public. And only when both sides are shown to the public, that is when the real debate start.
3. Has the mainstream news media -- msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change'?
No, the msm have not fairly nor accurately informed the public about these so called 'climate changes'. Everything is presented in a fashion where it is heavily favourable for the political side and it has almost completely ignored the scientific side.
1. Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
Yes, people’s lifestyle got changed. Due to mass gas pollution, many people change to take TTC. Canadian government advocates using the water heater by solar energy.
2. Is the "debate" over?
No, it isn’t. Most time the public only see one side from the media. However, the truth or reality is not presented. The trend of the media is controlled by government. People rarely see one side.
3. Has the mainstream news media -- msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change'?
No. To some extent, the news media did not present fairly and accurately. Many scientists reports or references about “climate change” are not presented to the public.
With regard to the climate change (global warming), most people follow what the new media reports. The really data and changes the public did not fairly get
1. Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
- Yes, me and my family have changed our regular light bulbs to energy saving ones, and we also try to save energy by turning off the lights when not in use.
2. Is the "debate" over?
- The "debate" is not over because not all the scientists have presented their point of views yet. I think they should have a live debate and have both sides(Al Gore's side and the scientists) present their facts, so the public can see both sides of the argument and decide for themselves who is right.
3. Has the mainstream news media -- msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change'?
- The msm has NOT fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change', they only have shown Al Gore's point of view and all of a sudden global warming becomes a big problem. The government then uses it for election purposes, and this is when politics gets annoying.
1. Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
- Yes, me, my family and friends have all started to be really conscious about how far we drive, how high we put up the heat or air conditioning, and some of us have even bought smaller, more fuel efficient cars to be "kinder" to the environment.
2. Is the "debate" over?
- No, for most people the debate hasn't even started yet. They only know of one side, which is the Al Gore point of view. There should be in fact a REAL debate with REAL scientists and should be broadcasted for everyone to see.
3. Has the mainstream news media -- msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change'?
- No, MSM has not informed the public about climate change truthfully because when asked if we fear global warming, we are not at all hesitant to tell you that we are. Our beliefs are all based on the information that we are provided with, and if we fear global warming so much, its clear that we are misinformed because climate change is infact a normal part of nature.
1. Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
I do believe people have made changes, small changes, but they are coming along. the people who have no done any changes are the ones who obviously are not effected by any of this.
2. Is the "debate" over?
I do not believe that the debate is over, there are so many people who cannot decide which side is true, whether they want to people media itself and the information media has or scientists.
3. Has the mainstream news media -- msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change'?
I don't think that the MSM has informed the public about climate change, they are just warning us and telling us how to change things, but not telling us for our own good why this happening, and why now oppose to before.
1. Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
Yes, my family has changed all of the light bulbs in our house with energy efficient ones. My sister and I have also taken the initiative in using the public transit to travel (whether we're going to school, the mall, etc.) in order to help reduce the pollution around us.
2. Is the "debate" over?
The "debate" between whether or not humans have caused this dilemma is definitely not over. We are only being "informed" about this specific situation through the media (where only one side of the situation is being presented). The voices we have yet to hear from are those of the scientists who oppose the views of the media. Once both point of views are presented, we (the viewers who are misinformed) will finally be able to choose who we truly believe.
3. Has the mainstream news media -- msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change'?
I do not think that the media has informed the public about the change in our climate fairly and accurately. The media has only focused on "well-known" public figures in our society who are telling us that this climate disaster is our fault.
1. Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
• Yes, many people that I know have made changes within their every day lives due to all the fears and concerns revolving around global warming. Family members of mine for one, purchased a hybrid car this summer. They figured that purchasing a hybrid was a wise choice due to the fact that they use less emissions, less gas and are environmentally friendly, rather than a standard "gas-guzzling" vehicle.
2. Is the "debate" over?
• In my opinion the debate has yet to start. There is no debate when information that is one-sided is voiced. As discussed in class, the media is very one sided, failing to provide ALL the facts.
3. Has the mainstream news media --msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change'?
• It's safe to say that the MSM has not accurately informed the public in regards to 'climate change'. In a matter of speaking it has only scraped the surface. The majority of the information that the public has been exposed to is biased, only stating that global warming is an apprehension.
1 .Yes, one of my friends bought a fuel-economic Japanese car other than a SUV just because a fuel economic car makes less air pollution. When shopping at No Frills, I preferred box than plastic bags. Additionally, most bulbs in my house are low energy bulbs. People do change their lifestyle a lot due to Globe warming.
2. I don’t think the debate is over. Because the public has not been present enough information about both tow sides. None scientist can bring up sufficient evidence to convince the public that we are causing a planetary climate disaster. Moreover, 30,000 scientists sign a petition, urging U.S government not to sign Kyoto. Apparently , they don’t agree with it either.
3. The msm don’t fairly and accurately inform the public about climate change. All the public heard is only information of one side. People can not heard much voice from another side.
1. Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
Yes, my friends, family and I do our best to reduce global warming.
We change from the transportation, recycling and air improvement.
• Transportation: I ride bike to school everyday instead of driving.
• Recycling: I do not throw the waste in the street, instead I recycle the waste like bottles and wasted papers when I see. In the public after eating, I throw the garbage into the garbage can instead throwing everywhere.
• Air condition improvement: I convince my families and friends not smoking, which is good for the environment. Besides I like to plant trees and flowers in my backyard.
2. Is the "debate" over?
• I do not even think the debate is existing. Simply the debate is about argument, but there is just one side which is the media. The real debate will begin when the scientists on the stage.
3. Has the mainstream news media -- msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change'?
• I personally do not think the msm informed the public fairly and accurately information about the ‘climate change’. We need the scientific proof; the media always say the good point and hide the downside, which misleads most public.
1. Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
- Yes, my friends and family have made few changes to their lifestyles. we all changed our lights bulbs to the energy savings bulbs. Also started to take transit to work.
Is the "debate" over?
- No i don't think it is over, because the public isn't aware of the other side issue and their explanation behind the whole Global Warming. i personally think the other side should be given a fair fair chance to talk about and present their topic to the public.
Has the mainstream news media -- msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change'?
- No, i just realized watching the videos that there are two sides of this issue, and the media is not showing both sides. They should really stop being bias and handle the situation maturely.
1. Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
Yes, In my home country "Bangladesh" our Government has banned using all Plastic bags in 2002, which is environmentally friendly. So, now people are using other substitutes like as Paper bags. Moreover, recently they are using Compressed Natural Gas in most of the vehicles, which is more environmentally clean than the other fuels. So, the whole country changed their lifestyle due to fears about global warming.
2. Is the "debate" over?
No, I don't believe that the debate is over, because everyday we are listening only one voice and argument about global warming. So, i think media should provide other side's opinions too.
3.Has the mainstream news media -- msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change'?
After watching that documentary film "The Great Global Warming Swindle", I think our media is not giving the right information about global warming to the public. MSM should disclose entire facts with scientific proofs.
1. Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
- I know some people in Canada who has changed their lifestyle by using fuel efficient cars, energy savings bulbs, upgrading refrigerator and air conditioners and some companies using CO2 cutting technology. But in my opinion,it is not a global trend as I've seen very few people in Asian countries like India,Bangladesh, Nepal,Pakistan ect.or Eastern European countries Like Russia,Ukraine or Belarus, who are conscious about the problem.Probably mass media is not active in those countries or this is not the issue of the first priorities in these regions.
2. Is the "debate" over?
I don't think the debate is over . Most of the people I know are not aware of the issue.None of the sides of the debate has come up with unquestionable evidences to support their point of views. In order to make educated decision on the issue, open and broader public discussion is required. Participation of Ecologists, Environmentalists and Scientists are essential to bring us to the light.
3. Has the mainstream news media -- msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change'?
-No.Personally, I think that media is not neutral as we don't see the balanced points of view from the stage arguing with facts and evidences from the both side.It seems that msm represents only those who are claiming the global warming is a problem caused by human being.Probably politics and giant media magnets are working intentionally together to get some political advantage. It is not a responsible and unbiased media policy.
1. Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
.YES I HAVE CUT DOWN USAGE OF PLASTIC BAGS, AND I USUALLY PUT PAPERS AND GARBAGE IN RECYCLING BINS
2. Is the "debate" over?
.NO, AFTER WATCHING THE VIDEOS IT GOT ME CONFUSED, PEOPLE NEED MORE INFORMATION TO MAKE DECISION.
3. Has the mainstream news media -- msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change'?
.NO, USUALLY MEDIA TRIES TO BUY MORE AUDIENCE BY SHOWING PEOPLE WHAT THEY TO WATCH MORE, IN RETURN MORE MONEY FROM ADVERTISERS.
1. Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
-Yes i have made a few lifestyle changes. I have changed the light bulbs in my home, now i walk to school instead of drive.
2. Is the "debate" over?
-NO. The debate is definitely not over, nor will it be over anytime soon if you ask me. The reason for this is because nobody has yet given any solid proof as to what actually causes global warming.
3. Has the mainstream news media -- msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change'?
-No it isn't fair at all because it seems to me that the media somehow always displays ONLY ONE side of every story. Nobody really has anything positive to say, but the negatives surely come out quickly because people like to hear it as much as they don't admit to it.
1. Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
Yes, my family has changed most light bulbs to energy efficient bulbs and always turning the light off if we’re not in the room. Most importantly, we carpool as much as possible to reduce air pollution. As for myself, if the destination I am going to is near by I would walk there instead of driving or using public transportation.
2. Is the "debate" over?
No, the debate can never be over until there is actual proof that we are really not the cause of this problem. The focus has only been from the political side and never from the scientific side which only makes you wonder who to believe. Until both sides present us with valid proof, we should not have a verdict so soon.
3. Has the mainstream news media -- msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change'?
I do not think MSM has informed us with the truth. We are constantly being bombarded with half the truth of everything. There are things we are never being told about. We have only heard about climate change from public figures blaming us about it.
1. Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
Yes, Due to fears about global warming I have changed my habit of bringing green bags to every grocery shopping. The plastic bags we use everyday, are not easily to get rid of. Therefore, they burn them or burry them under the ground. Eventually, burning plastic bags or producing plastic bags generate toxic substances on the air that cause global warming. Recently people and companies changed to use more of green bags and paper bags (LCBO) rather than using plastic bags.
2. Is the "debate" over?
It seems to be over but it is not. We usually get information about global warming or climate change from media. Most people rely on the media information without any doubt. Media should give accurate and fair information.
3. Has the mainstream news media -- msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change'?
To decide whether msm is fairly informing or not is personal decision. However, I would say msm has bias because it shows only results and issues of global warming without both sides of view.
1. Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
Yes. I know many people have changed their lifestyle like using energy saving bulbs, taking public transportation, recycling garbage, etc.
2. Is the "debate" over?
No, I don’t think it is over because the media has reported just one side of the story. The media has not presented both sides. Therefore, people believe what they hear from the media which should inform them scientific side and political side.
3. Has the mainstream news media -- msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change'?
No, the msm has not fairly informed the public about ‘climate change’ because some governors and politicians are brought under their power. Therefore, people have heard positive side for the governor and politician who ignore the scientist side. People should know right of all information which are scientific side and political side.
1.Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
Actually, i did change my lifestyle a little bit. Now I do my recycle and separate the garbage from the green bin. I know doing all these are for keeping our environmental nice, but I wasn’t really doing it due to fears about global warming.
2. Is the "debate" over?
It's not gonna over that easily, since the issue haven’t really solved. People are still wondering what the real cause of the global warming is. Apparently, it’s the debate between scientists and politicians. Probably, politicians are leading for now, since the majority of media presented one side of this debate, but it doesn’t mean the debate is over. Once the scientific research finds the strong answer and scientists are speak up then that will be the ending for this debate.
3. Has the mainstream news media -- msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change'?
Not at all, media unfairly informed public about the climate change. The media tend to be more on the politician side. All we can hear from the media are from one side as the most. The petition was surprised me that more than 31,000 scientists signed for it. However, media did the minimum they can do.
1. Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
Yes, I know others that have changed their lifestyles to make improvements on this earth. Most of us, have been forced to compost now (green bins). People have started car pooling and buying cars that are safer for the environment. People want to make a change and make this a better place to live.
2. Is the "debate" over?
No, there are people that believe we are not destroying the environment and it is only mother nature. This will be an on going debate.
3. Has the mainstream news media -- msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change
As we discussed in class, we can see that msm is not informing the public fairly. We are only hearing on side of the argument. We need to hear from the scientist and see facts to make a fair discussion.
1. Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
yes, my family have changed our light bulbs to energy saving ones. tend to drive less if possible and recycle regulary.
2. Is the "debate" over?
definitely no, most people have never heard from the other side of the issue (evidents provided by scientists). we have only been told with Ai Gore's theorem, there will be no debate untill both sids are fairly present to the general public.
3. Has the mainstream news media -- msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change'?
no, we have only heard from one side of the argument, nothing was mentioned from scientists point of views.
1. Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
I Have made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming. My family changed all the light bulbs to the newer ones that use less electricity and give off less heat.
2. Is the "debate" over?
According to the media, environmental activists and the politicians in Ottawa it is over. That climate change is occurring and its real. But I think the debate is not over as long as those opposed to the idea of global warming do not get the chance to put forth their arguments. Not all of those opposed to the idea work for think tanks funded by oil companies and or car companies.
3. Has the mainstream news media -- msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change'?
No main stream media have not given those opposed to global warming any air time. Even if they did the news reporter would ridicule and insult the scientist and not allow them enough time to put forth their case.
1. Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
Yes, in my family we have started using energy saving Light bulbs and also some of my friends. In my house we do not use dryer to dry our clothes. we use sun light. We use public transport when travelling than our car.
2. Is the "debate" over?
Personally, I believe the debate is not over because one side is presented to the public. they have to be presentation from both side.
3.Has the mainstream news media--msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about "climate change?"
No, the media is not fair nor accurate. they have only presented their views. (always one side). Many scientists findings about global warming are not presented to public. We all know that media has influcene on most people judgment.
1- Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
Yes and No. People have changed light bulbs, stoves and other things in their home just because the increase in price of electricity, oil and gas. I do not think people would really fear about global warming until they do not really suffer from it. Some people do not even know what global warming is or how it is affecting them or how their behavior is affecting the Mother Nature and others.
2- Is the "debate" over?
I do not think that the debate is over since this is an ongoing problem. Media has only showed the bad or the good side of the global warming, but that is not enough. I do not think that showing them only one side of the problem will convince them to change their lifestyle.
3- Has the mainstream news media -- msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change'?
Well at certain degree they have informed the public about the climate change and also no to certain end. I do not think media will tell everything bit of information to the public. Media’s job is to inform the public with what is happening around them and let public decided what they want to do about it. The msn has only reported the problem of global warming, but has never showed the solution to it.
1. Have you or people you know made lifestyle changes due to fears about global warming?
Its not really a change that we fear but it is a scare we are going accordance with it; its the media scare and the government restrictions that we have to oblige with. My friends have started recycling and sorting our garbage.
2. Is the "debate" over?
The debate has not even started, there has not been a proper media debate. There is still a lot more research to be done before this issue can be clarified.
3. Has the mainstream news media -- msm for short-- fairly and accurately informed the public about 'climate change'?
Main Stream news media has always been biased in a sense they tend to follow the culture the so called "trends". The msm has only provided one side of the story and they are following that track for quite sometime now.
