Welcome

We'll take a close look at how the major U.S. television news media present some of the big issues of our time like the environment, AIDS, racism, and terrorism.I hope that you'll discover some answers to the question expressed by the course title.

Bias by Bernard Goldberg is available in the bookstore. Goldberg was a senior reporter with CBS News. He wrote this book, which became a bestseller, five years ago. It's an insider's view of how the major television news media often slant important stories. Because of this book, most of his friends in the media dumped him and claimed that he is just angry with CBS, his former employer.

You'll write summaries of each chapter week by week, so buy the book now. This course will involve a fair bit of reading and a lot of discussion, both posting your opinion on this website and talking in class.

1. What are your strongest impressions of this film?
I was surprised to learn that there was so much more to the Muslim religion in terms of interpretations, and beliefs. Also I never realized that there was a feud between different groups of Muslims.

2. Does the film change your perspective on any of the questions you answered previously? Which? How?
Yes, most of the questions I answered if not all I have a different view on now. The war on terror started long before USA got involved, since there were people speaking out to stop certain Muslim groups from spreading their beliefs etc. Also this war involves pretty much the whole world, since in some views of terrorists everyone is the enemy, not just USA and Al Qaeda, even though they are a part of it. Terrorists came to be through the belief that they need to convert all non-Muslims to their interpretation of Muslim laws. Some Muslims themselves are against these people and speak publicly, often resulting in receiving threats etc.

1.Before watching the film in todays class I really didn't know about much about the issue w/ terror and how it all started off. Muslims in the film strongly showed that they want an Islamic society and are very against democracy. I was shocked to see that when a person of their own kind believes in something other then "Allah" they then become known as a trader, and is no longer an Islam as they attacked and isolated Naser. I found it strange that these people interviewed in the film were so patriot about their religion and try to force Islamic laws in a different country. I understand that they want to go by their laws, but what were they exactly thinking when they made the decision to move to Canada or the U.S? That everything would simply change in order to accommodate their beliefs? I agree when Naser quoted "Whats your anger? You can worship your god in which ever way you want" so that doesn't mean that everyone else should go by this too. The Muslims in the film said we (as in Canadians, Americans etc) simply have nothing good to say about them and that it's disappointing that we are not aware of their religion and beliefs, but isn't that hypocritical of them to say when they show a clip of a 3 yr old Muslim who is asked if she likes jews and she simply says no, because they are pigs? They come to believe that we are destroying their beliefs and that we are unfair to them, but what does that make them when they have taught a 3 yr old girl to hate against jews?
2. When we were answering the questions today before the movie I honestly did not have much to say, because I knew very little. However, after watching the film yes my perspective had changed drastically knowing how war of terror originated. Although Canada strongly believes in freedom I can understand that these people want to go by their books, but that doesn't necessarily that laws should be forced. I mean everyone is apart of a different culture and religion so with that being said everyone has the right to believe in which ever they wish and shouldn't have fear over their choices.

(1) My strongest impression about this film is that within the Muslim community there are different interpretations, beliefs, and values about Islam. I am surprised to learn that there are conflicts about the doctrines of Islam. Few people who speak about the right doctrine of Islam are labeled as traitors and they no longer regard as Muslims. They are isolated and threatened.

(2) Some of the questions I answered in class I now have a different view. Before I used to say Islam is the only religion that encourage killing. Now I am wrong to say that because Koran did not teach them to kill. One thing these extremists fail to understand is that they cannot go to another country which already has laws and religion with the hope off converting and changing their laws into Islam. In North America, They have been given the opportunity to practices their religion they should be glad for that. In some Muslim counties Christians are not allowed to practice their religion publicly.

1. What are your strongest impressions of this film?

the strongest impression about this film is the number of attacks on those who are standing on the opposite sides of 'the rise of Islamic power'. I think it is very frightening to hear these people being attacked or followed around in where they live because they think differently about their beliefs. Most importantly, I think think problem resembles a lot of other problems we had in the past where one group wants to take over the other group so whoever stands in their way causing nothing but dilemma.

2. Does the film change your perspective on any of the questions you answered previously? Which? How?

It definitely makes me change my perspective after watching this film and comparing it to the answers i wrote on the 'quiz'. When asked, "Who start it first?" I think I have an idea of who really started this problem because it did not just start recently but from a long time ago. As a human being living on the planet earth, the media is constantly bombarding us and feeding us news about how the Americans are the bad guy for starting war with those in the middle east but after watching this film it gives us a bit of a clarification about the topic. Another question that would make me rethink the question would be the title "War on Terror" Although it does describe specifically what the problem is but you have an idea that 'terror' is referred to the situations that arises during times such as terriost attacks, threats, false propaganda and the whole situation being a frightening problem.

1. What are your strongest impressions of this film?

My strongest impression about the film was to know that the voice of moderate Muslims are coming up to challenge extremism in their own faith. This movement should be supported and encouraged.

2. Does the film change your perspective on any of the questions you answered previously? Which? How?

Yes, the war didn't start when NATO or US army started anti-terrorist movement in Afghanistan or Israel/Palestine problem as I mentioned previously in our class. But it didn't start in Denmark too.The civilized world is opposing Islamic Extremism since the phenomena challenged their peace.

1. What are your strongest impressions of this film?

I didn't realize there were different types of Muslim groups that did extreme acts as showed in the video. I knew the religion had restrictions mostly for the females but did not know of such violent situations.

2. Does the film change your perspective on any of the questions you answered previously? Which? How?

Well, yes I suppose. Am I suppose to believe the war started because of Muslims?? I think I am in between still I am sure the United States has a lot more to do with it. This has been going on for years long before 911 and will hopefully end soon.

1. My strongest impression of the film is that Saudi Arabian Royals knows the risk of "Wahhabism" in their kingdom and so they made a deal by giving the muslim extremist money to fund their activities around the world and my question is how do we protect ourselves, then from these extremist? Isn't it self serving that the saudi royals are protecting themselves and their people by making a deal with the "Wahhabis" to stay out of Saudi Arabia and unleashing them into the world by providing them funds?I think we need the help of every good muslim around the world to curb these extremist, they know these people and they can help.

2. Does the film change your perspective on any of the questions you answered previously?Which? How?
Yes, I thought that the issue on the War of Terror started during the old days of fighting between the muslim and christians during the "Crusade" and I was wrong, the war on terror started much recently around the 1970's but what's intriguing is that some muslim think that they are the only people in the world that has the right to exist because they want an islamic state, so how about the other faiths of the world, don't they have the same right? We all live in the same planet, why can't we respect each other,if you are in the muslim country respect their culture and law but in the same manner if the muslims are in a different country they must also respect the culture and law of that land.Respect is a two way process, we must learn to adjust to where we live.

1. What are your strongest impressions of this film?
I have some friends which are Muslim, and i thought i knew enough information about the religion, however, its was suprising and shocking to find the information that was presented in the movie.
2. Does the film change your perspective on any of the questions you answered previously? Which? How?
The movie changed my prespective of looking at the religion. I never knew there are such a extreem Muslims. Those extreem groups not only put only in danger other Muslims that are not extreem, but the rest of the world as well. I believe that the government and society should seriusly do something about the issue.

1.What are your strongest impressions of this film?

Many young women and men are controlled by some terrors’ organization. Wahhabism educated and influence Islamic children to hate other religion people. The youth lost their image. Wahhabism use their religion “god” to control Islamists. On the other hand, I’m so surprised that there are lots of Islamists who against terrors and love world peace in the world. In the mean time, those elites got attacked by Wahhabism constantly.

2. Does the film change your perspective on any of the questions you answered previously? Which? How?

Absolutely, the film changes my perspective. Before I thought the terrors’ action started since 9 11. In fact, in 1979, Wahhabism has formed terror organizations. This organization got money from Saudi Arabia royalty to set up 1000 schools in the world. They tried to train and slant the young generation, made them anger the world. The youth got lost. For example, some Islamists used their body as bombs. How dangerous and terrible it is! Islamic culture is so extremely strict. On the contrary, the film shows some Islamic elites advocate world peace and against terrors. Most Islamists are controlled under Islamic religion. Women have no rights and are bonded. Wahhabism are using Islamic beliefs to control them. After watching the film, I think that the public should distinguish between Islamic terrors and Muslims. People should against terrors; people should not discriminate with Muslims.

1. I was very surprised to see the hate in those extremists. The threats they have to other moderate muslims that oppose them, like '..we will kill u..', is very shocking. Makes me feel the religion is somewhat corrupt.

2. I did not know about the issue of 'War on Terror' or what it was before the film. After seeing this film, I felt a bit annoyed on how ignorant the extremists are and also my view on the religion.

1) My strongest impression on this film is the fact that there is an issue bewtween muslims themselves, i never thought that the to could go againt one another, but it seems like some are tryin to adapt to a new way, and others say that it is not right towards there religion.

2) The film defiantly changes my perspective on the question that i answered previously because i thought this was more to do with the u.s. and not the musliums alone. I also thought that this was after the 9/11 but it is beofer that.

1. I had some basic view of the Muslim. Not all of them are called “terrorist”, but because some beliefs have the conflict with the government. They think it’s not the law by their “God”, so it causes them to do some badly. Also there are lots of interpretations; under those different interpretations they are against each other sometime even have death threat.
2.This movie tells me some questions that I couldn’t be able to answer beforehand. Now I can tell the war on terror that some issues have some relations with Muslim, but not all. Also it happened long time ago not recently, but this issue has been rised up these years since 911 happened.

1. What are your strongest impressions of this film?
I was just mad after watching the film. how is it best to force islamic law instead of government laws, it just doesnt make any sense to me, maybe i am not a muslim, i dont know what they are thinking. well if islamic law should be replace for muslims, does it mean other religious laws should also apply different groups. You get to be treated differently just because of your culture or beliefs.

2. Does the film change your perspective on any of the questions you answered previously? Which? How?
yes. before the film terrorist means individuals that goes against general public and create fear (9-11), nothing related to Muslims, Muslims just people like Christians or Buddhists that worshop different gods. I was shocked how those extremists threaten to kill others just because they made some statements or speeches that oppose islamic extremists' believes. Everyone has the freedom of speech, no one should be punished for express their thoughts.

1. What are your strongest impressions of this film?
- The strongest impression of this film is how the Iman’s and others react when Muslims like Kadr and Sefoui are speaking out against their laws and what they believe. I think it goes too far when it comes to planning for someone to kill them and all the death threats. Another strong impression is the Iman in Arizona suggesting that the Islamic laws rule the Muslims instead of the democratic laws. Also, when the newspaper manager was saying he lets his wife decide if she wants to wear the head scarf or not, but his workers must wear them seems controversial.

2. Does the film change your perspective on any of the questions you answered previously? Which? How?
- The film doesn’t really change my perspective on any of the questions I answered. This film just opened my eyes to facts that I have never really heard about, so right now I’m trying to process this new information.

1. What are your strongest impressions of this film?
-Within Muslims there are different classifications as in all other community. On one side there are groups of Muslim who are very extreme and strongly believe that they are right, and are so blinded that they would do any thing and believe its for good of mankind.

2. Does the film change your perspective on any of the questions you answered previously? Which? How?
-The film contrasts between two groups of Muslim. I knew about the this problem in Muslim community, so it did not change any perspective for me but the film did show the measurement of this problem.

1) After watching the film I was left speechless. I was able to learn many new things, and the film also enhanced any other perceptions and things I already knew about the Islamic religion. It came as quite a shock to me learning that there are such feuds within the same religion, amongst extremists and moderate Muslims. Prior to watching this film I never was aware that there was such tension amongst some of the Muslims, and it became of such shock to me, that people that ultimately are of the same religion can have such drastic and diverse views, and opinions on different matters.

2) Through watching this film I can say that yes, my perspective has been altered. Prior to watching the film my understanding and knowledge regarding the questions was nowhere near as thorough and concise as oppose to after I watched the film. Prior to watching the film I can honestly say that perhaps some of my views were biased, it wasn’t until I watched the film that I realized the Qur'an does not preach anything but goodness, it is the people (extremists) who comprehend their religion differently than the others. In regards to one of the questions we were asked, like “Do you think the war will ever be over”? I feel asthough this battle that is occurring within this religion will never be over – I feel this way due to the fact that changing someone’s beliefs, and shaping them to be “correct” is impossible. A person/group has to be willing to change for the betterment of them, rather than what the overall public wants them to do.

1. What are your strongest impressions of this film?

My strongest impression of the film was, how one of the Imam, Muslim religious leader can say that "We will kill him" but after that he totally denied in front of the public and said "It was kind of a joke".

2. Does the film change your perspective on any of the questions you answered previously? Which? How?

Yes, one of the question I answered in class: when and how war of terror started? After watching this film I realized that there are two main groups in the Muslim religion, one group want to lead their life in the right and peaceful way with Islamic faith and the other group want only their religion will exist in the world and for that reason they will do all immoral and evil things. I was wrong, actually War of terror started before 9/11.

- 1 - What are your strongest impressions of this film?

I was surprised that some extremists believe so much in some of the things that are preached to them. I think its crazy that they would rather follow rules in a book than be ethical. It was also crazy to me that if your Muslim and you become involved in politics, you have to give up your faith, according to some. The most shocking thing I herd in the movie was when they were talking about stonings, and the man said, "how is it controversial? I didn't make it up, its in the book".

2. Does the film change your perspective on any of the questions you answered previously? Which? How?

Yes, it does. The war on terror started long before 9/11. It was only this event that singled out Muslims. Also, this situation does affect me, because I learned that there was a group of extremists in Canada who wanted to commit acts of terrorism, before I thought that this terrorism scene wouldn't affect me because I live in Canada..

1 - What are your strongest impressions of this film?

Honestly, I did not know why and how the war of terror happened. After I watched the film, I could get a little bit information about the Muslims. Some point I was surprised about the war of terror which happened by royals group. It means the media is strongly controlled personal perspective.

2. Does the film change your perspective on any of the questions you answered previously? Which? How?

I was changed my perspective by the film on the question which is I answered previously. I thought the 9.11 terror connected between U.S and Muslim but it is not. The terror happened around 1979.

1. What are your strongest impressions of this film?

I was surprised to see the Muslim children being taught to hate on, not just any human being, but hate towards those who are of generally the same faith/ culture as they do.

2. Does the film change your perspective on any of the questions you answered previously? Which? How?

After watching the film, I feel as though the "war on terror" begun a long time ago. It is only recently where other Muslims (of a different sect) are trying to make a difference in how they are depicted in the media. The war is not only set between Muslims and Americans. It is unfortunately between the Muslims and the whole world.

1. What are your strongest impressions of this film?

Before watching this movie, I didn’t know much about Muslim. I was surprise that Muslim has different interpretations and belief. Different groups of Muslim also have conflict with each other. Any Muslim who supports democracy will be treat as traitor and will be isolated and get out of Muslim.

2. Does the film change your perspective on any of the questions you answered previously? Which? How?

Yes, now I have new answers for most of questions. The war on Terror started long before 9/11. U.S and Europe are not the only enemies of terrorist. Actually everyone is their enemies.

Personally, the film did not come as a surprise to me, nor did it show me something that I have not already seen or heard about Islam and Muslims. The individuals presented in the film do not represent the religion of Islam and it is actually sad to know that the general public believes otherwise. As far as the different sects, views, or interpretations within Islam that may cause feuds among those sects, there is no need to look at them in a negative manner because they are no different than the different views that a Catholic may have for a Seven-Day-Adventist.

My opinion did not change because I watched this film. I still believe that the war on terror is just a way for economic and political powers to spread their wings further while having their nation’s approval. Today’s Arab was yesterday’s Russian. The “war on terror”, in my opinion, is a ghost that will stay and will take different forms depending on the time, and sadly we will keep believing in it.

1. What are your strongest impressions of this film?

As I didn't know a lot about Muslims before, and even I had some prejudice about them because of the terrors including 9/11, it was quite surprising that there are so many kind of Muslims and many of them are against terror.

2. Does the film change your perspective on any of the questions you answered previously? Which? How?

Almost everything. I'd just thought 'war on terror' was started since 9/11 and it's the war between the U.S. and the Muslim before I watched this film, but now I realize I was totally wrong. It was even before 9/11, and it's not just simply between the U.S. and the Muslim but much more than that. It's about all over the world, and even among the Muslim groups, some groups are against terror.

1.What are your strongest impressions of this film?

Actually, I don't have any knowlege of Muslim but I have known about inner working of Muslim.also, dealing with islam is challenge to the west.

2. Does the film change your perspective on any of the questions you answered previously? Which? How?

I answered few questions. I have not really though about terror issue. However, I got some information after watching this video that Muslim is not only one involved in terror and there are some inner working with terror.

1. What are your strongest impressions of this film?

My strongest impression of this film is that the Islamic religion is having an internal war between the moderates and the extremists. Both groups are disagreeing with each other and saying things like how the other group is not “true Muslims”. Also, the way the extremists Muslims are attempting to enforce Islamic laws and Islamic laws only by creating their own parallel community is really disturbing.

2. Does the film change your perspective on any of the questions you answered previously? Which? How?

Yes it has. Basically it changed my perspective on all the questions. But for one, I know the war is against the terrorism and that is what the extremists Muslims are causing. This film has exposed me to more information relating to how terrorism started and what was some of the motives behind all the horrible things these people have done.

1. What are your strongest impressions of this film?
- Overall the film is interesting, there are many things that are reveal about the muslims and their culture. with all the respect,my impression is cruelity, self centered, sefishness, arrognant and stubbborn. Maybe it is the culture that I am not familiar with and the culture i grew up with; however that is how i feel about the film. Also including is that this religion are having thier own internal issues among their own culture and it just expand so much that it not only affect them but other people.

2. Does the film change your perspective on any of the questions you answered previously? Which? How?

Yes, the film definitely has change my perspective on the questions. It has given me a broader idea on why this specific group are attact countries and doing things that are unacceptable by the public. (terrorist attact). Referring to the film and not the general population of muslims ( please don't be offended) from the film, i think that it is all about the power and control. If they can't get it, they will not let you go happily. control and power id everything. It is just the belief of teaching and believing in the culture and it is not always a good thing.

What are your strongest impressions of this film?
I was surprised to see Muslim is a really huge group. it influences lots of people. even people who lives in the foregin country, like Canada, American, and European, muslim this religion still spread widely. it spreads from generation to generation.
2. Does the film change your perspective on any of the questions you answered previously? Which? How?
yes, I do not know the muslim has their own law. I thought they just have something like bible to help people think about life and everything. but it turned out , they actually have something like bible, but it has much more power than bible. you can have one's life if the book say so. if there is really war. the war is much more scared if the enemy is themselves. they like brothers and sisters ,if they kill each other. we maybe scared of the world.

1. What are your strongest impressions of this film? My strongest impression about this film is that Muslims have two basic groups- extremists and moderates and both groups have their own problems and conflicts. The last word in the film “democratic and Islam can never combine” is also impressed. I don’t know the exact reason. I guess due to the conflict between moderates and extremists?

2. Does the film change your perspective on any of the questions you answered previously? Which? How? Actually, I had no idea about Muslim and even 9/11 issue. I just knew 9/11 was happened by Muslim. However, now I know there are two different groups in Muslim and extremists make the war on terror not all Muslims. As Koran didn’t teach to kill people, now I also know extremists have a wrong belief in their religion.

1. What are your strongest impressions of this film?

I did not know much about this issue with terror until watching the film in class. I was shocked to see how violent the Muslims were towards women especially. The film really opened up my eyes and gave me a different outlook on how other countries/religions really act out for what they believe in, no matter how wrong it seems to other people.

2. Does the film change your perspective on any of the questions you answered previously? Which? How?

I can pretty much say that my questions have been answered because i didnt know much about the issue to begin with. I learned a lot about the faith of certain religions. As to who really started all of this war, was it the Muslims or the United States? I firmly believe that it takes two sides to get something like that to happen, and it is never just one sides fault.

1. What are your strongest impressions of this film?
I didn’t realize that the war could be this worst and I wonder how Muslims could live in a place where they don’t get peace at all. And just because they are Muslim, they don’t have to go through all these struggles. Even in Toronto, more than 10 Muslims were arrested because they planned to bomb in some important places including parliament.

2. Does the film change your perspective on any of the questions you answered previously? Which? How?
My perspective toward this movie didn’t change because I knew who started the war and I have answered them correctly in the previous discussions.

1. What are your strongest impressions of this film?

My strongest impression of the film derived from Wahhabism and how it has made such a big impact on the moderate Muslims.

2. Does the film change your perspective on any of the questions you answered previously? Which? How?

I knew about the extremist who exercise their power over moderate Muslims by any means necessary to get them to believe in what they want them to believe. What i did not know the amount of power and money invested by Saudi to immortalize Sharia law.
