Welcome

We'll take a close look at how the major U.S. television news media present some of the big issues of our time like the environment, AIDS, racism, and terrorism.I hope that you'll discover some answers to the question expressed by the course title.

Bias by Bernard Goldberg is available in the bookstore. Goldberg was a senior reporter with CBS News. He wrote this book, which became a bestseller, five years ago. It's an insider's view of how the major television news media often slant important stories. Because of this book, most of his friends in the media dumped him and claimed that he is just angry with CBS, his former employer.

You'll write summaries of each chapter week by week, so buy the book now. This course will involve a fair bit of reading and a lot of discussion, both posting your opinion on this website and talking in class.

W1 C2.2 How the Al Gore view is affecting kids

Following are two short articles that show how the public's belief in the Al Gore alarmist point of view are affecting kids. What do you think?

Kids Fear Global Warming More Than Terrorism, Car Crashes, and Cancer, According to National Earth Day Survey

National Survey of Middle School Students Shows Kids Believe More Needs to be Done to Save the Planet

NEW YORK, April 20 /PRNewswire/

While recent polls show that American adults are most concerned about the war in Iraq, terrorism, and health care, a survey of more than 1,000 middle school students across the country found that kids fear global warming more than any of these issues. The survey was conducted by BrainPOP, a New York based educational provider.

Some of the most intriguing findings from the BrainPOP global warming survey include:

  • Nearly 60 percent of children said they feared global warming and environmental disasters-such as hurricanes, tornados and flooding-more than terrorism, car crashes, and even cancer (22.3 percent feared terrorism most; 14.6 percent cancer; 5.9 percent car crashes).
  • Nearly one-third of children reported thinking about global warming a lot and worrying about how the effects of global warming will change the planet and directly impact their lives.
  • Another 41.2 percent think about it sometimes and say that they are somewhat worried
  • Roughly 60 percent of children surveyed believe that more needs to be done in their community to help the planet and stop global warming.
  • When asked what effect of global warming worries them the most, the majority of kids surveyed are most afraid of the toll it will take on the lives of people.

Students at a California public school have written a series of letters to Chicago's Heartland Institute, which works to discover and develop free-market solutions to society's problems, attacking its members for "destroying our planet" by refusing to endorse the politics of Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" film.

  • "We feel that it is wrong what you are doing. We know that you know that global warming is NOT we repeat NOT a myth, And we think it is selfish that you would take money over yours and your peers lives."
  • "We feel upset because you are making Global Warming worse instead of helping it. We know that almost half of the country knows that G.W. is a crisis. We know that you could help the environment with the $800,000 you have."
  • "I think you are fools for denying G.W. you know it could kill us all & you're just adding to it. We are going to tell you about global warming. I don't care if you don't want to read, but I'm making you read it you horrible people," I want you to help stop G.W. not increase it," said one letter.
  • "I do not think that what you are doing is right because you are telling people that global warming is not a crisis. If this is not a crisis, how come floods have occurred in asia, Mexico, and India. Plus, how can you explain why the glacier glaciers are melting. they can't melt themselves, because they are in the coldest region in the world."

In regards with the article, where kids think more about global warming then any other global issues. My opinion is that schools inform and talk about the issue alot, they also incourage kids to take responsibility to do something about it, in order not to make it even worse then it is now.It is very good that they do it, beacsue kids are our future, and if they take the initiative to make things better, that would be great. The only concern is that, when they will grow up the problem might not seem that big ang important to them, as it did some time before, because they grow up and proirities in life change.

We know that children are very impressionably by the media more so than any other category of people, and the letters these kids sent to the heartland instituite prooves this. They are speaking as if they actually do know the facts, and that the institute knows that global warming is a "crisis". It is also evidence that the debate has yet to begin because most kids do still fear climate change, and know nothing of how the earth changes in climate naturally, without the help of humans, the cars we drive, the factories we build, or even the light bulbs we use to light our rooms. These kids would not feel the way they feel if they had atleast minimal imput from their teachers about the truth of climate change. Im conclusion, all members of society, kids, studemts, treachers, politicians, all need to be educated about the earths natural science.

Reading the past two articles it seems that kids are watching way to much television! They are extremely worried and are talking about the pictures and videos they see on television of floods and hurricanes. These kids think that eventually all of this will happen in the town they live in too. They are very upset at Al Gore, looking at the comments that the kids have given to him. These kids need to be taught about why this is happening, within their households or even at school, and this issue can't be avoided.

kids have every right to worry about such an issue, especially because they would have to deal with if for a long period of time. global warming is an issue that not all kids are exposed to or informed on compared to the issue of terrorism, or deadly diseases such as cancer, which gives it a certain ambiguity thus a great fear of the unknown that is certain to take place, as it has already started to. the media downplays the issue as inferior to those such as terrorism or cancer resulting a great deal of ignorance to the global warming issue among the general population.

After reading both articles the most shocking point made was the first sentence. I can not believe the children are more afraid of G.W then they are of car accidents, terrorists and so forth. G.W is a big issue and should be addressed. The answer must be found to give a little bit of relief to all people. It provides that G.W has effected people of all ages and should not be taken lightly, especially when 60% of children are speaking out against G.W.

I think the views of the kids are strictly taking on from Al Gore's point of view, in other words they have no point of view. They don't know the other side to the "debate", so their arguments are onesided and blinded. One child wrote "how can you explain why the glacier glaciers are melting", which to me indicates that they don't think there is an oppisition.

This article reflects the kind of kids we have today that they are more involve and aware of what is happening in the environment. It is very understandable that the kids are more concern and fearful of the effects of global warming because they can relate the planet us their home and in it is them, imagine their house and to see that it is being slowly destroyed is very alarming.Their nightmares can be also be related to the fact that the planet like their home is being destroyed by outside forces and they feel threatened, the feeling of security within your home (planet) is being compromised, wonderful animals are slowly dying because their habitat or their home is being destroyed is really fearsome.

We can see that children are very concern and worried about their future. They are being taught now of days to save the environment as they are the future and they have to protect and make this world a better place to live in. Since Al Gore has risen this issue, we can find more and more kids working hard to protect and save the environment around them.

I think that's good to let kids know how much global warming is dangerous. It's obvious that terrorism, car crashes, and cancers are dangerous and terrible things, so we don't have to mention about it to children. But for global warming, the situation is totally different. If someone doesn't mention how it's affecting to our lives and planet, kids can't know how harmful it is. And if kids never know about it, they'll not mention about it and not concern or watch out. Then it'll make the situation worse. Therefore, it's very important and right thing to let everyone know about the danger of global warming well.

I think the global warming is a crisis. kids always watch TV, they get many information from there. The kids most worry about around themselves. children in school take sciences, they know more natural world. they love to protect environment. as a media, it affects the public lot, so the truth is very significant. the people and the children follow what the media presents. whatever the TV or newspaper say, the fact is going to happen. Human being harm the planet . the planet give them back to human being.

I think the global warming is really become one of the biggest problem in the world nowadays. In my mind, children should be happy and no concern evevrday, but they act far beyong their age, it really shock me. It is said the children are the future flowers of a country. Then I think people should concern about global warming now, because even the kids are worried. it is still not too late.then public need to do something to fix it. Al Gore dispalys the truth to the kids, and public. instead the media refuse to even endore Al Gore in the crisis. I really do not understand what they are thinking. why the grown-ups act childish? and what we are going to tell children?

It's not a bad influence, kids are getting worried about G.W.and start doing something to stop the G.W. Even though we are not sure if us people caused the G.W. still been awared of this issue leads us to a good future. As early as kids concerned about it, the more effort they will put into it. so more and more people can start to protect our environment.

We can't blame the kids for having the thought and fear for Global warming more than accidents and terrorists attack. I am not surprise by the fact that they are cause that is what the majority of the population is educated by. The majority believes that because of global warming, we are face with so many disasters such as the hurricane, earthquakes and floods. Kids have encounter these facts live, on TV and others so it is hard for them to not fear Global warming.

As adults, we are educated that we are cause of global warming, so they look up to what we believe too. It is a sad thing for our future generation to worry so much.

I'm not surprised that the middle school students are worried about global warming because that's all we hear in the media. I think it's good that they want to help the environment.

I think the public school students in California have the right to be upset, but some of them seem over the top.

Both the articles presented here clearly state the reactions and comments of children of different ages regarding their feeling towards global warming. As you can see, majority of these children have thoughts and opinions on preventions for global warming. I believe that children should be able to know the truth behind global warming just as much as adults should. We all have the right to know the truth and the prevention we can do to help decrease the chance of it. Children have responded to what they think about this and advising the public figures to step up and help out. These children know just as much as adults when it comes to the importance of protecting the environment. Children worry just as much as we do when it comes to this major crisis that can affect our world. They should be given an honest answer behind global warming.

I think we should not make kids fear about something that may not be ture. Although Main stream Media informed the public again and again that The G.W is crisis. Nobody can give sufficient evidence to prove it's ture. G.W will change a person's lifestyle since he/she is a kid. If G.W is not a serious problem, all the changes we made doesn't make any sense. That's a waste of money and life.

Being presented with this survey, shown in the first article, I now have the impression that children fear global warming because the media showcases the issue more than other global disasters. Therefore, I believe that it is the media and the parents' responsibility to inform these children of the OTHER issues out there.

The children/ students mentioned on the second article should understand that not everyone has a similar opinion to that of Al Gore’s. Just like the children mentioned on the first article, these students from the California public school have been informed by a one-sided perspective. Therefore they are “attacking” the members of Heartland Institute with these letters. Once again, if these children were well-informed (by both the opposing and affirming point of views), they would further understand (whether or not the students believe) the institute’s position and respect it.

World has changed few decades ago it was very big place to live in, what happened in one part of the world took years to reach other part of the world if at all. With movies, world wide web, TV so widely available its very hard for one, not to get influenced by it. These kids are exposed to every modern tool. In a survey all the higher percentages, are the matter shown or talked about a lot about media, which influences everybody today. I strongly think media usually take one side of the story.

I think its normal that kids are more concern about global warming that other issues, and opposing to some facts show in the film "An Inconvenient Truth". Global Warming is caused by human, thats the "Truth" kids have been told for many years, its hard to persuade kids to believe something thats "False". Also due to the effect of media, with all the information supporting AI Gore's side.

I think the children have the right to be afriad of global warming because its going to have great impact on their lives. they are the future. for examples,in fews years to come they wouldn,t be fishes for the children to eat. Also, their so many nutural things that we are enjoying today. soon all these things are going to be wipe out because of global warming. these children believe that adults are not bothered because G.W.is not going to affect them directly.the truth is that as adult we are not doing enough to stop Global warming. I beleive it is our responsibiltiy to spot G.W. If not for any thing but for the sake for our children.

What I think is these children that are writing these letters are prime examples of victims being hit with propaganda. These children do not know the real facts, the truth, nor were they ever shown the other side of the story. However, global warming is an issue even if its just climate changes, it is good to see children to care so much and actually take action and actually try to make changes.

Q.1 W1 C2.2 How the Al Gore view is affecting kids.

-According to the National Earth Day Survey, almost 60 percents of middle school students are afread about Global worming than hurricanes, tornados and flooding-more than terrorism, car crashes, and even cancer. Most of them are afraid of the toll it will take on the lives of people. It's a good sign that the young generation is concerned about large problem and obviously, they will try to change their lifestyle to prevent it from the childhood. But balanced mass media policy is required not to missguide these kids.

Attack of the members of Heartland Institite by a group of students of a California Public School is the results of Biased propaganda through mass media by Albert Gore and and his followers. This opens a wide view to the young generation. But the students as society members should have the equal opportunity to hear and know the opposite point of view too.And only then they will have the opportunity to do a balanced conclusion.

Through reading the following articles, Al Gore's views have definitely been instilled within the children of our future. The fact that school's have raised awareness is smart for the fact that it raises attention within the children - with issues that we as a whole are dealing with. However, it is also of importance that the children are made aware of the fact that there is indeed another side regarding the issue of global warming, and I feel just like the rest of us, children must be made aware of these issues and possiblities, which ultimately allows for freedom of thought.

I am glad to hear that a lot of kids are concerned with global warming. The education should be mention more then now therefore the earth will be better and it will not happen more then now. Moreover, not just with education, we should use every community, and media for our future. Because the environment can not change one day.

Kids are educated about global warming a lot from school or media or parents without any proofed evidence.
Kids are just considering about horrible result such as hurricane, tsunami, and any disaster.
In my opinion, kids need to be educated with direct evidence because they are easily affected and can feel from their education.

I was very surprised to find out that kids are more afraid of Global Warming compared to terrorism or other issues that were stated. IMO, I think kids are over reacting to the situation. Kids end up believing everything they hear and see in movies because they have very limited knowledge on the issue. We all know that things that happen in movies are dramatized right?
Anyway, I'm not saying Al Gore is putting a negative impact on kids. It is good for kids to be exposed to the situation and have reaction on it because they are the ones that will be affected in the long run. I don't think Al Gore would've thought how big of an impact and effects (fear) his film and comments would have on kids.

Both articles indicate that children are very afraid of global warming than the other global issues. Because they are sensitive and easily get worried about anything. Most of the schools in North America showed Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" film, so now they are more conscious about global warming than the war, terrorism and other problems of the world. They are simply believe that the news media is real and global warming will destroy the whole world. I think media and school should provide true information to everybody with facts and proofs.

Although kids are very concerned with G.W I feel that this is only because we are yet to experience the worst and this is what teachers choose to educate their students on. Daily car crashes are a common theme in todays society; therefore, they have resorted to learn how to deal with this issue. Nonetheless, it is nice to see that the children of our future are so concerned about G.W and hope for the best.

In my opinion, children need to be educated about our changing climate. The school teachers have to tell the kids about that what is going to be after 20 years, and should change kids’ attitude from childhood. Everyone have to encourage children to reduce energy and save materials at home and school. Also, teach them to re-use materials, especially paper, before they're cast-off. It’s important to reduce the global warming in future.

Propaganda? Remember Uncle SAM? Funny how it works, its a great way to keep the future generations worried and giving up their lifestyle to save the environment. Its been said fear will make anyone do anything. Clearly Al Gore's view is affecting the kids as they are repeatedly pushed to believe that world is coming to an end. I say propaganda, to keep the money flowing into an abyss of nothing! Oh, and not just our generations but the generations to follow.

We can see how much kids worry about the global issue more than terriosms and car crashes and cancers. Kids are affected by what they learned and what they saw in TV. Global warming is of course a big issue nowdays; however, kids have to also know the other sides of global warming and learn other issues such as terrisom, neclear weapons or cancers. I think schools have an important roll to teach kids. For example, by showing the movie,“The Great Global Warming Swindle', teachers can teach there are other sides of global warming aspects.
